RV Generator Basics
RV electric generators are designed to be used in motorhomes, travel trailers, pop-up campers, conversion vans, truck campers and fifth-wheels. RV generator installation varies by location from underneath the main body, roof or rack mounted, to the front or back. RV generators are powered by gasoline, diesel or propane, depending on the unit and tow vehicle.
Portable RV generators can be used in pop-up campers and are specially equipped with an RV generator muffler, making them extremely quiet. They may also be purchased to supplement an RV generator for extra power.
A few things to remember about portable RV generators:
- Portable RV generators must be run in an enclosed area.
- They have a cooling system, air intake, and exhaust system that must follow RV code restrictions.
- Portable RV generators are easier to start than units not specific to RVs. They have three times the horse power at 1800 rpm, and they're easier to muffle.
- If you are running an air conditioner for several hours at a time, make sure the generator is rated for continuous use.
