What do I look for mechanically when buying a used RV motorhome?

Choosing the right used RV Part II

When you are shopping for used RVs or used motorhomes it's important to make sure the engine and driving components work properly. Along with checking the functions of your living quarters, your checklist for buying a used motorhome (or other used RV) should include the following items:

  • Analyze the engine oil to see if it's burned, an unusual color, or the wrong depth
  • Check for rust
  • Turn on the radio, wiper blades, air conditioner, heater, cruise control, lights, horn, turn signals
  • Check the brakes, power steering, power windows, suspension, mirrors, tires, and wheels. Your wheels should be no more than five years old!
  • Check the condition of the upholstery and carpets
  • See if there is a maintenance log from the previous owner. If there is, you can be assured your used RV was in good hands!
  • Consult a reputable mechanic who knows about used RV motorhomes if you are unsure or have questions.
